Abstract

Liquidambar formosana Hance is a large, multipurpose, and fast - growing tree species distributed mainly in Ngan Son, Na Ri, Ba Be, and Pac Nam districts of Bac Kan province (now belonging to Thai Nguyen province). The study results showed that seeds sown immediately after collection achieved a germination rate of 98.6%, with germination starting after 4 days and lasting for 7 days. The treatment of soaking seeds in warm water at 40 °C for 4 hours, followed by incubation in a cloth bag until cracking before sowing, resulted in a high germination rate of 92.7%, which was 21.3 - 27.3% higher than other treatments. Seeds began germinating after 5 days and completed germination after 7 days. The most suitable potting mixture for seedlings in the nursery was 90% topsoil + 9% bio - organic fertilizer + 1% superphosphate. After 12 months, seedlings showed a survival rate of 88.7%, an average root collar diameter of 0.83 cm, and an average height of 87.1 cm. During the first two months, seedlings required 25% shading, while from the third month onward, they grew best under full sunlight conditions. Seed storage at -5°C in a refrigerator maintained germination rates ranging from 31.7 to 97.1%, depending on storage duration; however, storage time should not exceed 120 days to ensure seed viability.
