Research on protection forest planting techniques in coastal hillymountainous areas, Phu Yen province

The research was carried out on coastal hilly-mountainous areas of Phu Yen province aiming at selection of suitable tree species and planting techniques. Research results show that survival rate of 5 trial tree species is rather high: 75.0 - 87.1%, MAI of diameter is 1.1 - 1.4 cm/year; MAI of total height is 0.8 - 1.2 m/year, of which Hopea odorata, Erythrophloeum
fordii, Ailanthus malabarica are more suitable compared to Cassia siamea and Dipterocarpus alatus. Ground vegetation cover treatment in strips is more effective than treatment one in the whole area. Hopea odorata, Dipterocarpus alatus mixed planted in rows have higher survival and growth rate compared to mixed planted one by rows. After 6 years since
planting, survival rate of Hopea odorata, Dipterocarpus alatus and Ailanthus malabarica mixed planted in rows is 82.2 - 85.7%, MAI of diameter is 1.12 - 1.4 cm/year, MAI of height is 0.78 - 1.08 m/year, rate of poor trees occupied only 6.6 - 12.5%, whereas these trees mixed planted in rows have survival rate only 79.5 - 82.4%, MAI of diameter is0.97 - 1.2 cm/year, MAI of height is 0.72 - 0.93 m/year, poor trees occupied 10.1 - 11.7%.
