Suitability assessment of some tree species for establishment of large timber plantation in Bac Kan province

Abstract

This resaerch is a part of the project titled “Application of science and
technology in afforestation of large and mixed timber forests to increase
productivity and value of forestry products” implemented in Bac Kan
province. The research conducted site classification and developed
suitability maps of some species that are potential for large timber
plantation in Bac Kan. These species are Michelia mediocris, Canarium
album, Canarium nigrum and Chukrasia tabularis. The results show that
moderate suitable sites (S2) for Michelia mediocris, Canarium album,
Canarium nigrum and Chukrasia tabularis covers larger area. It is esimated
that more than 81% of tortal production forest and non forestland in the
province is moderately suitable for growing Michelia mediocris. With
regards to 2 species Canarium nigrum and Chukrasia tabularis, the suitable
area (S1) and moderately suitable area (S2) are similar and account for the
majority of production forestland and non forest land in the province. These
ese are important bases for Bac Kan province to select tree species and
develop large timber plantations.
