Results of selecting mother tree of golden vietnamese cypress (Xanthocyparis vietnamensis Farjon & Hiep) in the Northern mountainous provinces as the basis for vegetative propagation and exsitu conservation

Abstract

The Golden Vietnamese Cypress (Xanthocyparis vietnamensis Farjon &
Hiep) is a newly discovered and valuable endemic species in Vietnam. The
species distributes naturally in limestone forests of Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang
and Cao Bang provinces. However, at present, the number of mature trees is
very small and is being exploited in the form of destruction, depleting
resources and gradually losing valuable genetic resources. Therefore, the
conservation and development of this tree species in the northern part of
Vietnam is very necessary. Within the scope of this paper, we present the
results of research on selection of plus tree as mother tree to obtain vegetative
propagation materials for the Exsitu conserved clonal experiments. As a
result, the team selected 30 mother tree in Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang and Cao
Bang province. Specifically, in Ha Giang were selected 15 plus trees in Bat
Dai Son Nature Reserve, Quan Ba district; in Tuyen Quang were selected 7
mother trees in Sinh Long commune, Na Hang district; in Cao Bang were
selected 8 mother trees in Ca Thành commune, Nguyen Binh district. All of
trees are grew and developed well, which is a good source of raw materials
for obtaining seed materials for further studies.
