Abstract

This study investigates the genetic control of 8 - 9 year old 2nd gen progeny Acacia mangium located at Quy Hop (Nghe An), Bau Bang (Binh Duong). The aim of the studied was to increase the understanding of genetic factors associated with growth and stem quality (such as stem straightness, axis persistence and branch size), and their genotype by environment interaction with growth and stem quality traits to facilitate the improvement of A.mangium
in Vietnam. Our results showed that there was significant difference on growth traits and stem quality among families in the two trials. The 5 families with superior growth and stem quality traits exhibited significantly greater stem
volume (exceeded from 48.0 to 86.7%) compared to the average. Narrow sense heritability of growth traits in both trials were low to moderate but have a tendency to increase with age (h2 = 0.07 - 0.42), heritability of stem quality indicators are low and stable according to the age level (h2 = 0.05 - 0.21). At two sites, the coefficient of additive variation (CVa) ranged from low to high and had a tendency to decrease gradually with age (CVa = 2.5 - 42.4%). Estimated genetic gains of growth at Quy Hop trial (age 9) achieved between 8.8 - 13.9% and for stem quality between 4.4 - 8.8%, while at Bau Bang trial the genetic gain for growth was between 4.6 - 19.9%, corresponding to 16.5%
stem straightness. Therefore, it is feasible to improve the growth and quality of the stem. At 8 - 9 years old, the genotype by environment interaction effects between the two sites was not important for growth and stem straightness.
