SITUATION OF Cinnamomum balansae H. Lec AFFORESTATION IN SOME NORTHERN PROVINCES

The results of summarizing and evaluating models and technical measures for afforestation of Cinnamomum balansae H.Lec in some Northern provinces showed that, C. balansae has been planted in some localities according to different planting methods (pure species planting, mixed planting, enrichment planting and scattered planting). The tree adapts well to many different types of sites, including poor soils. In good soil conditions, with intensive practises, at the age of 3 - 5 years, the tree can grow in diameter AD1.3 ranging from 2.6 - 2.7 cm/year and in height from 1.9 - 2.2.5 m/year; At the age of 9 trees still reach AD1.3 is 1.6 cm/year, AHvn is 2.3 m/year; even at the age of 15 - 16 trees still achieve an average annual growth of AD1.3 from 1.5 - 1.6 cm/year and AHvn from 1.5 - 1.6 m/year. This shows that C. balansae has the potential to develop large timber plantations in some northern provinces. However, it is difficult to replicate the area because there is not enough scientific basis for determining planting sites, lack of good seed sources and measures to intensify plantation forests.
