Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the survival rate, growth characteristics, and tree quality of Afzelia xylocarpa and Nauclea orientalis within a mixed-species plantation model in Ea So National Park, Dak Lak Province. Data were collected in 2026 using a chronosequence approach across 30 sample plots (400 m² each), representing stand ages ranging from 3 to 7 years. Measured parameters included survival rate, total height, crown diameter, root-collar diameter, diameter at breast height (DBH), and tree quality classification. Data were processed using descriptive statistics, and independent samples t-tests were performed to evaluate differences between the two species. The results indicated high mean survival rates for both species without statistically significant differences (91.6% for Nauclea orientalis and 88.7% for Afzelia xylocarpa). However, Nauclea orientalis exhibited statistically significant superior growth compared to Afzelia xylocarpa across all evaluated parameters from age 4 to 7 (P < 0.01). By age 7, Nauclea orientalis attained a total height of 8.1 m, crown diameter of 3.2 m, DBH of 11.0 cm, and root-collar diameter of 13.5 cm, whereas the corresponding values for Afzelia xylocarpa were 3.7 m, 1.8 m, 7.0 cm, and 8.2 cm, respectively. Regarding tree quality, good-quality trees predominated in both species (74.6% for Nauclea orientalis and 69.0% for Afzelia xylocarpa), with Nauclea orientalis exhibiting a significantly higher proportion of good–quality trees (P < 0.001). These findings provide scientific and practical foundations for recommending silvicultural techniques and scaling up sustainable forest restoration models in the Central Highlands.
