CURRENT SITUATION OF CULTIVATION OF Callerya speciosa IN SOME NORTHERN PROVINCES

Abstract

Callerya speciosa is a woody vine with starchy root, a non-timber forest product species in the list of 100 medicinal species with high medical and economic value to focus on developing in the 2020 - 2030 period.
C. speciosa has only received attention in growing in recent years. Most of the models are newly planted on a trial basis with an area of 0.1 - 0.5 hectares. The area planted C. speciosa in the Northern provinces is also very small, fluctuating on average from 5 - 10 hectares/province. C. speciosa is being grown mainly in a pure species method on bare land, in addition there are also some models of growing under the forest canopy of some tree species to increase the added value of the forest. The growth in diameter and height of C. speciosa fluctuates greatly between models due to different impact techniques. Most of the current C. speciosa after 1 year of planting, the stems are cut at an average height of 40 - 50 cm from the ground so that focus on growing roots and then each year, additional stems are cut 2 - 3 times so the tree usually has a low height. Depending on the location and intensity of intensive farming, C. speciosa planted after 2 - 3 years only yields an average of 0.9 - 1.8 kg of roots/plant. At age 4 - 5, the root yield averages 1.1 - 2.3 kg/plant and the roots are small. Some planting models of C. speciosa that are well cared for when harvested at the age of 6 can yield an average of about 2.5 - 3 kg of t roots/plant. From the results of the investigation and interviews with relevant stakeholders, technical measures for growing C. speciosa in the Northern provinces have been systematized. This is an important basis for growing C. speciosa more effectively in the future.
