Study on characteristics and site division of coastal sandy soil as a basis for
planting protection forests, carried out in the coastal area of Tra Vinh
province, in order to identify types of site, as a basis for arranging suitable
plant species on sandy coastal areas. Surveying topographical characteristics,
land and vegetation cover by line survey method, each commune arranges 3
routes in the direction perpendicular to the coastline, the length of the route varies from 200 - 1,000 m. Site division is based on topographical factors,
soil, vegetation cover and moisture regime. As a result, it was determined
that (i) there are 4 types of topography and geomorphology of coastal
sandy, including: well-drained sandy beaches; undulating sandbanks
interspersed with tidally flooded lowlands; form of barrier dune of medium
height, narrow but long, steeply sloping on both sides and low sandy beach,
semi-flooded, relatively wide and flat, flooded in rainy season; (ii) there are
3 main types of soil, which are salty, less acidic sand; salty, neutral sand and
salty, alkaline sand; (iii) plant composition including shrubs, herbaceous
plants including 15 species of 8 plant families, coverage 70 - 100%;
(iv) coastal sandy soil is divided into 4 site groups A, B, C and D with 12
types of sites. Group A includes sandy, saline, slightly acidic soil (I1c);
sandy, saline, neutral soil form (I2c); sandy, saline, alkaline soil (I3c) this
group is favorable in crop cultivation and afforestation. Group C includes
sand dunes or dikes, saline, less acidic (III1b); sand, saline, neutral (III2b)
and sandy, saline, alkaline soil (IV3a) is a fixed type of sand that almost
never gets flooded, and has a deep groundwa ter level, so it is very
difficult for plantation. Site group B includes sandy, saline, neutral soil
(II2c, II2e), sandy, saline, alkaline soil (II3c, II3e) that are flooded with
salt water due to tides, so they are also not favorable for plantation.
Group D includes sandy, saline, slightly acidic soil (IV1d); sandy, saline,
neutral soil form (IV2d) that are seasonally flooded, so they are also not
favorable for plantation
