Damage status and some biology characteristics of Eurema blanda (Boisduval, 1836) leaf eating acacia hybrid and Acacia mangiumWild. in Quang Nam province

Abstract

Acacia hybrid and Acacia mangiumare the main forestry trees in Quang Nam
province. However, at present, acacia plantation in 6 districts in Quang Nam
province are being damaged by leaf-eating caterpillars with scientific name
Eurema blanda(Boisduval, 1836) belonged to genus Eurema, family Pieridae,
order of Lepidoptera. Acacia mangiumplantations have a higher rate and degree
of damage than acacia hybrids. The average body long female is 14.2 mm (± 0.2),
the upper wing surface dark orange-yellow, the underside of the forewing has 4
small black streaks, irregular shape and size that parallel to the upper edge of the
forewing; The upper surface of the hindwing is yellow with a small black margin
on the outer edge, the underside has evenly spaced black streaks on the wing
surface and a small black streak on the outer edge of the wing. Male are smaller
than female with an average body long of 13.5 mm (± 0.2), the wings are the
same as female’s wings but the black border is smaller and lighter, the abdomen
of male is longer and more pointed than female. Eggs oval-shaped, average long
1.2 mm (± 0.2), white milk. Larva goes through five instars, that have 3 pairs of
thoracic legs and 5 pairs of ventral legs, larva from the firts to the fifth instar have
an average body long of 0.3 mm (± 0.1); 9.4 mm (± 0.3); 14.6 mm (± 0.3); 21.3
mm (± 0.2) and 26.6 mm (± 0.2) . Pupae are on average length 17.2 mm (± 0.3).
