This study analyzed the characteristics and effects of social capital of local
communities on the performance of community forest management in the
North Central Region of Vietnam. The study was carried out at 6 models
of community forest management in 3 provinces in the region through
application of participatory rural assessment survey and in-depth interviews
with 181 households about the social capital factors of the communities and
their effects on the outcomes of community forest management. The research
result shows the multidimensional aspects of local social capital (from the
network to the shared values) as well as the variation of the social capital
values in the studied communities. The result of this quantitative statistical
analysis confirms that the existing social capital of the communities has
promoted the implementation and the performance of the community forest
resources management. higher social capital is; the better community forest
management performance is in terms of forest entirety. Of which, social
indexes of network, trust and reciprocity (mutual help) are significantly
and positively correlated with the theoutcomes of community forest
management. Therefore, in order to promote sustainable community forest
management, social capital needs to be considered as an important resource
to be identified, maintained and enhanced in order to promote cohesion,
participation, for the sucessfullness of community forest management
