Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the silvicultural characteristics, distribution, and natural regeneration capacity of Parashorea chinensis and Cinnamomum bejolghota in Pu Luong Nature Reserve, Thanh Hoa Province. Data were collected from 30 survey routes (total length of 122.6 km) and 30 temporary sample plots, integrating assessments of the canopy tree layer, regeneration layer, shrub layer, and ground cover. The results showed that P. chinensis was recorded along 14 routes (56.8 km; average encounter frequency of 4.7 trees/km) at elevations of 450 - 1250 m above sea level. C. bejolghota was recorded along 10 routes (41.4 km; average encounter frequency of 4.4 trees/km) at elevations of 400 - 1650 m. Both species were predominantly distributed in poor and medium forest types, with canopy coverage ranging from 0.3 to 0.6. The tree density and average standing volume in the forest where C. bejolghota and P. chinensis distributed as 729 trees/ha (87.2 m³/ha) and 716 trees/ha (104.7 m³/ha), respectively. The proportion of trees exhibiting good growth reached 81.9% for C. bejolghota and 79.7% for P. chinensis. Although both species demonstrated natural regeneration potential with regeneration densities reaching 4608 seedlings/ha in C. bejolghota sites and 3957 seedlings/ha in P. chinensis sites the proportion of promising regenerated trees remained low, at 12.38% and 19.68%, respectively. Regenerated individuals originated mainly from seeds and were concentrated in the height class under 1 m. High coverage of the shrub and ground layer (62.5% in P. chinensis habitats and 68.0% in C. bejolghota habitats) potentially adversely affected seedling growth. These findings provide a scientific foundation for proposing measures to conserve, restore, and develop P. chinensis and C. bejolghota populations in Pu Luong Nature Reserve.
