Status and distribution of endangered species of wildlife species of Sop Cop Nature Reserve, Son La province

Abstract

Sop Cop nature reserve in Son La Province has typical ecosystem of the northwestern region of Vietnam. The reserve habors high biological diversity, especially wildlife. The fauna survey in 2013 identified the presence 25 endangered mammal and 12 bird species currently residing in Sop Cop Nature Reserve. Most endangered wildlife species have small population size, some of those are very rare and will be likely to be extinct if there is no urgent and suitable conservation efforts. Especially, Sop Cop nature reserve is still supporting 2 critically endangered species including Tiger (Panthera tigris)
and Elephant (Elephas maximus). The endangered wildlife species mainly distributed in the Huoi Pa Tet and Pu Cam peak. The area surrounding Huoi Pa Tet, Pu Cam peak, Ban Kha are serverely affected by human preasures such as hunting, logging, and illegal deforestation
