SEED CHARACTERISTICS AND PRE-SOWING TREATMENTS OF Prunus itosakura Siebold

Previous studies on cherry blossom in Vietnam have mainly focused on adaptability, seed source selection, propagation, and cultivation techniques. However, quality seed sources remain limited, while seed characteristics and seed treatment methods have received little attention. This study evaluated seed characteristics and the effects of seed treatments on germination of cherry blossom, with the aim of improving seed propagation and providing quality seed sources. The results showed that fruit width and length averaged 7.6 - 7.9 and 10.3 - 10.6 mm, respectively, while seed width and length were 5.1 - 5.3 and 7.4 - 7.5 mm, respectively. The 1,000-fruit, 1,000-seed and 1,000-kernel weights were 712.7, 96.4 and 32.3 g, respectively, equivalent to about 1,407 fruits, 10,380 seeds and 30,960 kernels per kg. The kernel-to-seed ratio was 33.5%. Seed purity and moisture content averaged 96.0% and 29.8%, respectively. Seeds with the woody coat intact had a germination rate of 77.0% and germination energy of 71.3%. Germination started at 25.3 days and ended at 75.3 days, with most seeds germinating during the first third of this period. Removing the woody coat increased germination to 88.7 - 95.7%, while reducing the time to first germination to 9.0 - 10.3 days and the time to completion to 38.3 - 39.7 days. Among the treatments, CT2 (soaking seeds in warm water at 40°C, using a 2:3 ratio of boiling to cold water, followed by a germination stimulant) gave the highest germination rate (95.7%). Removing the woody coat improved germination and shortened the germination period of cherry blossom seeds.
