AN UPDATED CHECKLIST OF BAMBOO SPECIES OF VIETNAM

Updated checklist of Bamboos in Vietnam included 170 species of 34 genera, of which 137 species have scientific name, other 33 species have been carefully examined and determined as new species (sp.nov.). The Bambusa genus recorded the highest number of 41 species, followed by Dendrocalamus genus with 34 species, Schizostachyum genus with 20 species, Gigantochloa genus with 12, Melocalamus genus 9 species and Phyllostachys genus 6 species. During the last 20 years, 7 new genera had been reported namely Annamocalamus, Cochinchinochloa, Khoonmengia, Nianhochloa, Yersinochloa, Temochloa and Kinabaluchloa (new record). There were 49 new species belonging to 16 genera had been reported. The Dendrocalamus genus had 12 new species, followed by Schizostachyum with 9 species, Melocalamus with 7 species, two genera Maclurochloa and Yersinochloa has 3 new species, other genera such as Bambusa, Gigantochloa, Chimonocalamus and Temochloa each has 2 new species, the remaining genera have 1 new species. It means that the number of new species occupied 28.8% of total species found in the checklist, while the number of new genera occupied 17.6% of total 34 genera found in Vietnam.
