MORPHOLOGY AND DISTRIBUTION CHARACTERISTICS OF DENDROCALAMUS SPECIES IN VIETNAM

Field surveys carried out in 25 provinces of 8 ecological regions have found 33 species of the genus Dendrocalamus in Vietnam. Research on stem characteristics showed that the genus Dendrocalamus includes most species of large-stature within the sub-family Bambusoideae. There are 19 of total 33 species (occupied 57% of all species) have diameter of 10 cm or more; 15 of 33 species (occupied 45%) have internode length of 30 cm or more and 42% of all species have culm wall more than 2 cm. The species of the genus Dendrocalamus have been found in all 8 ecological regions. The Eastern North region has 23 species (69.7%), highest number of species; then followed by the Western North region with 16 species (48.5%), then the third is the North Central region with 6 species. Regarding provinces, Son La is the most diverse with 12 native species (occupied 36.4% of total species). The second is Phu Tho with 9 native species (27.3%). The two provinces namely Tuyen Quang and Dien Bien occupies the third place with 7 species each. Thanh Hoa is the fourth with 5 species and remaining provinces have 1-4 species each. During the last 15 years, 11 new species have been published in international journals of botany.
