Abstract

Crematogaster rogenhoferi is widely distributed in Vietnam and its eggs are often used as food. In addition, this ant species has been recorded as a natural enemy of some insect pests. This study was conducted to determine the biological and ecological characteristics of C. rogenhoferi in Lao Cai province, Vietnam. The results provided the morphological characteristics of adults, eggs, larvae and pupae of C. rogenhoferi. The development time of eggs, larvae, and pupae is about 26.5, 28.0, and 21.0 days, respectively. The natural diet of this ant is diverse and primarily consists of insect pests. This study recorded tree species that C. rogenhoferi chose to make their nests with preferred tree species including Acacia spp., Citrus spp., Dimocarpus longan, Dendrocalamus barbatus, Macaranga denticulata, Melia azedarach, Psidium guajava, Styrax tonkinensis, Vernicia montana. The ants usually use plant debris and organic residue to build their nests, at an average height of 237 cm above the ground. The average number of queens, females, males, and workers in each nest is 1.8, 1662, 45418, and 11209, respectively. The average number of pupae, larvae, and eggs is 2376, 3765, and 5372, respectively.
