Abstract

Soil available phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) are important indicators to assess soil fertility. Nonetheless, previous publications in Vietnam often omitted information about the distribution characteristics of these two nutrients in forest soil. Here, the distribution characteristics of available phosphorus and potassium in Acacia hybrid forest soil at different stand ages at the Xuan Loc Protective Forest Management Board, Dong Nai province have been described based on classical statistical analysis methods. Soil samples were collected from different depths of 0 - 10, 10 - 30, and 30 - 60 cm using a soil auger with a 4.5 cm internal diameter at the three stands of three different ages. The results showed that: (1) The available phosphorus content tends to decrease significantly with soil depth, while the available potassium content increases; (2) The average available phosphorus content increased from 10.14 - 36.99 mg/kg and the available potassium content increased from 18.27 - 24.72 mg/kg according to 3-, 5-, and 7-year-old stands; (3) Redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that stand density was the factor that most affected the contents of two nutrients P and K in A. hybrid forest soil cultivated in the study area. The results obtained in this study can assist forest managers in better understanding the soil available phosphorus and potassium distribution conditions at different stages of stand development and soil layers of Acacia hybrid forests in the study area, which is critical for reasonable fertilizer application and can provide new ideas for studying biogeochemical cycles.
