Abstract

This article presents outstanding macroscopic and microscopic features to help identifying two imported wood species including Lagerstroemia calyculata Kurz and Shorea roxburgii G.Don. The first species has the following significantly characteristics: Sapwood colour distinct from heartwood colour; on the cross section there are many stains, easy to see; smooth, straight grain of wood; hard, heavy wood; Vessels in solitary and multiples, commonly in short (2 - 4 vessels) radial rows; Wood ring porous or semi ring porous with number of 10 vessels/mm 2 ; small rays, usually exclusively uniseriate; Vessel-ray pits with reduced borders or apparently simple, arranged in sole form; Crystals present, prismatic, located in fibres and in chambered axial parenchyma cells, fibres exclusively septate. The second species has the following notable characteristics: Sapwood colour distinct from heartwood colour; the annual ring is not clear, the strips of oil cells in the tangent direction on the cross section; rough wood surface, inclined grain; hard and heavy wood; Vessels are exclusively solitary and multiples, diffuse porous, containing white or dark brown deposites in the vessels; narrow rays, irregular rays; There are scattered oxalate crystals in the rays; Parenchyma bounding the vesselsin the form of the winged type or continous winged type, and combining into the narrow, short, long strips in the tangential direction; Perforation plates simple, sole intervessel pits.
