The Nguyen Dynasty woodblocks and the sets of Buddhist woodblocks preserved at Vinh Nghiem Pagoda and Bo Da Pagoda are unique documentary heritage objects, carved from thi wood (Diospyros decandra Lour.), but are currently facing severe structural deterioration. This review examines the scientific basis for the application of acrylic resins (acrylic polymer) in the conservation of woodblocks. Six criteria are proposed for evaluating their suitability: micro-scale penetration, mechanical reinforcement effectiveness, photo-thermal stability, dimensional stability, reversibility, and compatibility with traditional printing ink. A comparison of two groups of acrylic resins: physically curing resins, represented by the Paraloid series, and in-situ polymerization systems, shows that Paraloid B-72 provides a good balance between reinforcement requirements and conservation principles for woodblocks with mild to moderate decay. In contrast, in-situ polymerization systems offer greater reinforcement but compromise reversibility and may potentially impair the woodblocks' traditional printing function. These materials should therefore be considered only in emergency conservation cases. The review also identifies gaps in experimental data on thi wood under tropical climatic conditions and proposes priority research directions, particularly the development of treatment procedures stratified according to the degree of deterioration, to establish a scientific basis for the conservation of woodblock collections in Vietnam.
