CURRENT STATUS OF PEELING BOARD VALUE CHAIN IN YEN BAI PROVINCE

Abstract

The study on the current status of peeling board value chain in Yen Bai province was conducted with 96 plantation households, 01 forestry company, 05 timber traders, 09 peeling board processing facilities and some local managers. The survey results show that the value chain of peeling boards in Yen Bai province is structured into 4 main stages, including: (1) Planting forests to create raw materials; (2) Timber harvesting, transportation, and trade; (3) Processing of peeling board; (4) Trade. Wood raw materials for peeled board production are mainly from Acacia mangium wood with a minimum forest business cycle of 6 years, supplied from households and forestry companies, with a minimum wood diameter specification of 10cm and no forest certificate. 93.7% of peeled board output is produced by household-scale processing facilities. The main market for peeling board consumption is export to the Chinese market and small output of peeling board for plywood production at domestic processing enterprises. The value chain of peeled boards still encounters many shortcomings in production such as: afforestation households of unknown seedling origin, low quality of seedlings, location of forest plots in steep hills leading to large planting and exploitation costs, lack of sustainable links along the value chain, The peeling board market completely depends on the Chinese market, large price fluctuations and many market risks, the production technology of peeling boards is not modern, not ensuring the quality of peeling boards to be able to participate in international markets with high quality requirements.
